A HISTORIC church tower in Mitcham is flaking lead paint but the church has to fundraise $68,000 to fix it.
All Saints Church vicar Dianne Sharrock said the heritage-listed tower was flaking paint and the council had directed the church to fix it.
A caller to Neil Mitchell’s 3AW program this morning said the council would fine the church $100 a day until it was fixed but the Whitehorse Council and the church have both denied the rumour.
“We put it out to tender and we’ve selected someone to undertake the work, but we do have to raise the money for it,” Ms Sharrock said.
“We’ve kept in touch with the council the whole way and they’ve been great and given us extensions because we do need to find the money.
“Obviously they want us to undertake the works and we’re complying, but we are not going to be fined $100 a day.”
